PMMA bone cements for orthpaedics and spinal surgery are mainly developed and manufactured to be marketed to global ortopaedic companies. In addition, own branded products are also distributed to trading partners worldwide.

The distribution is carried out internationally exclusively by trading partners, only in Germany aap Biomaterials GmbH sales also to hospitals or hospital purchasing groups.

Bone Cements & Accessories for Endoprosthetics

aap Biomaterials GmbH offers a wide range of bone cements and accessories, primarily for application in arthroplasty, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.

High quality bone cements serve as filler between prosthesis components and bone to anchor the endoprosthetic parts firmly and securely to the bone. The cements contribute to the longevity and functionality of the endoprosthesis. In addition to cements, aap Biomaterials GmbH provides its customers with accessories such as lavage systems and cement restrictors.

For vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, aap Biomaterials GmbH provides a specialized bone cement and an applicator system.

BonOs®R / BonOs®R Genta

BonOs® R and BonOs® R Genta are bone cements for use in artificial joint replacement.

Charnley established the fixation of joint replacements with PMMA bone cement as the gold standard fifty years ago. Employing Charnley's principles, the aap team now develops PMMA bone cements for renowned international customers. In part thanks to our more than 20 years of expertise in development and production, aap’s BonOs® R and BonOs® R Genta are based on Charnley’s gold standard.

The mechanical properties of BonOs® R and BonOs® R Genta guarantee reliable bone anchorage of the prosthesis.

The composition of BonOs® R and BonOs® R Genta is based on Charnley’s principle of using PMMA bone cements in artificial joint replacements, which was established as the gold standard 50 years ago. In accordance with Charnley’s principles, aap bone cement only contains the necessary raw materials.

BonOs® R and BonOs® R Genta rely on established procedures in the operating room and on well-known and safe processes of mixing and application. Depending on the user’s needs, the high-viscous cement can be mixed pre-cooled, uncooled, by hand or in a vacuum mixing system.

Zirconium dioxide is added to BonOs® R and BonOs® R Genta to guarantee the surgeon optimal X-ray visualization. The surgeon can at any time assess the distribution of the cement in the bone and around the implant on the X-ray image and thus assure an optimal outcome of the procedure.

Compositions

BonOs® R Genta contains the established antibiotic gentamicin sulfate. The local application of gentamicin is gentle on the patient. BonOs® R Genta releases gentamicin in a proven fashion, over a prolonged period and in effective concentrations. The release of gentamicin is remarkably reproducible and is controlled for each batch in order to guarantee constant quality.

EASYMIX®

EASYMIX® Mixing System is a sterile disposable vacuum mixing system for the secure mixing of bone cement.

The vacuum mixing and cementing technique reduces the porosity of the cement. Reduced porosity leads to a considerable increase of strength of the cement.

Properties

EASYMIX® is comfortable to handle. Just a few secure steps provide excellent mixing results. In case BonOs® R or BonOs® Genta is used a mixing time of 30 seconds is recommended.

The use of EASYMIX® in combination with BonOs® R or BonOs® R Genta relies on established procedures in the operating room and on well-known and safe processes of mixing and application.

Mixing with the EASYMIX® vacuum mixing system reduces the porosity of the cement. Studies indicate that with lower cement porosity the risk of aseptically loosening decreases.

Vacuum mixing with the EASYMIX® lastingly improves the cementing result. The reduced porosity of the cement results in an increase of the permanent dynamic and bending strength of the cement. Vacuum mixing with the EASYMIX® mixing system improves the cementing result with respect to cement-bone contact.

Compositions

The EASYMIX® mixing system consists of the EASYMIX® vacuum pump, the EASYMIX® cement injector and various cartridge sets.

EASYMIX® bowl

EASYMIX® bowl is a mixing system for mixing PMMA bone cement powder and liquid monomer.

EASYMIX® bowl can mix up to three units (total 120 g powder) of bone cement of any viscosity under vacuum.

PulsaClean® Disposable Lavage

PulsaClean® is an effective and easy-to-use disposable Pulse Lavage System used for intense wound debridement of bone and tissue defects.

The system features two nozzles and can be used for knee and hip arthroplasties.

Properties

Due to its rinsing and sucking mechanism, PulsaClean® allows optimal treatment flexibility for the user without any additional logistic effort. The PulsaClean® Disposable Lavage System includes a short and long nozzle, and an optional femoral canal brush is available. The short and strong bristles allow an intense cleaning deep into the marrow canal while also providing a rinsing and sucking function.

MicroAire® Lavage System

The MicroAire® High Speed Pulse Lavage is a resterilizable high pressure pulse lavage system for an intense wound cleansing of bone surfaces before cementing.

The cleansing contributes to a deeper penetration of the bone cement into the bone; it improves the contact between cement and bone and the rigidity of the bone-cement-interface.

Properties

The MicroAire® High Speed Pulse Lavage is a reusable high pressure pulse lavage system which consists of resterilizable hand holders and individual adapters.

The comprehensive accessories (sterile packed and disposable) range from different nozzles, over tube systems to nozzle-tube-sets (also specific for hip- and Knee-TEP surgeries) and splash guards.

All attachments can be exchanged easily during surgery.

The MicroAire® High Speed Pulse Lavage products are only available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

C~plug®

C~plug® is a resorbable distal cement restrictor that seals the intramedullary cavity and improves cement grouting to the implant surface for better implant fixation.

A distal plug inhibits the cement penetration into cancellous bone and improves the cement’s molding into the implant surface.

Properties

The C~plug® resorbs within approximately four weeks and does not need to be removed in potential future revisions. Furthermore the C-plug® is distinguished by its increased contact surface, accurate positioning and reduced distal pressure.

Modern cementing techniques allow the creation of an optimal cement mantle within the femoral canal. Using the C~plug® reduces the risk of a revision.

PE-Restrictor

The universal PE-Restrictor with flexible polyethylene lamellae is used to seal the femoral canal for all patient sizes.

The instrument, specifically adjusted to the PE-Restrictor, allows a safe insertion.

Properties

The PE-Restrictor occludes the medullary space, distal to the subsequent location of the prosthesis tip, to seal the femoral canal. This sealing is achieved by jamming the PE-Restrictor inside the femur.

BonOs® Inject

BonOs® Inject is a PMMA bone cement that is specifically adapted for spine surgery.

The cement is suitable for the fixation and filling of symptomatic vertebral compression fractures, vertebral tumors and vertebral hemangioma as well as for the augmentation of pedicle screws* where bone quality is poor, e.g. in patients with osteoporosis or degenerative or neoplastic changes.

Properties

BonOs® Inject is a radiopaque, injectable bone cement, characterized by its optimal combination of a short mixing period, a long working time and excellent mechanical properties.

During the mixing phase, the powder and liquid components of BonOs® Inject quickly mix together into a homogenous, ductile paste. After a short waiting period, the cement reaches an ideal viscosity for application. During the application phase BonOs® Inject is injected with a suitable viscosity which reduces the risk of cement leakage.

The unique cement formulation guarantees an optimized long application time, minimizing time pressure during application.

The viscosity of BonOs® Inject allows it to be used in combination with standard mixing and application systems for use of PMMA bone cements for spinal applications.

BonOs® Inject contains the radiopacifier zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), which allows a safe application and a good visibility of the bone cement under x-ray.

ManuMix®

ManuMix® is the mixing system for manual mixing of bone cement of low to medium viscosity and subsequent transfer in syringes for clinical application.

The unique patented design allows a homogeneous mixing of the powder and the monomer components as well as closed and clean transfer of the bone cement into syringes.

PerOssal®

PerOssal® is a fully synthetic bone substitute for filling and reconstructing primary contaminated bone defects.

The unique microporous structure of PerOssal® allows a constant absorption of liquids (inter alia antibiotics) as well as their controlled prolonged release.

Properties

After surgical cleaning of the wound, PerOssal® can be inserted into bone defects. The unique microporous structure of PerOssal® allows a constant absorption of liquids (inter alia antibiotics) as well as their controlled prolonged release during 7 - 10 days.

The surgeon is responsible for the selection and amount of antibiotics applied.

Additionally, PerOssal® is rapidly and completely absorbable. Thus the defect can be filled quickly with new, autogenous bone and the patient can be spared a further operation to remove the implant.

Cerabone®

Cerabone® is a ceramic bone substitute for permanent bone filling or reconstruction of aseptic bone defects.

Cerabone® is manufactured from bovine cancellous bone and is in its set-up and structure nearly identical to that of human bone.

Properties

Cerabone® is manufactured from bovine cancellous bone under consistently standardized conditions. By processing under high temperature for several hours (sintering > 1,200 °C), the interconnecting macro- and microporous hydroxyapatite ceramic system achieves a higher compressive strength than human trabecular bone.

Cerabone® has marginal differences in porosity and mechanical properties of human trabecular bone.

The porosity (macroporosity) of the ceramic varies between 65 - 80 Vol. % and the pores size lies within a range of approximately 100 - 1,500 μm.
